Every so often, a story comes along that seems almost designed for the internet. Ancient mysteries. Hidden chambers. Cutting-edge technology. Bold claims that challenge established understanding. The recent retraction of a paper claiming to have identified concealed structures within the Great Pyramid of Giza had all of those ingredients. Unsurprisingly, it attracted enormous attention. The retraction itself, however, may be the more interesting story.


I have always thought that one of the biggest challenges facing academic publishing is not fraud. It is plausibility.

Fraud is relatively straightforward. If somebody invents data, fabricates references or plagiarises another author’s work, there are established mechanisms for dealing with it. The boundaries are usually clear.

Plausibility is harder.

A paper can look entirely convincing. The writing may be polished. The references may appear comprehensive. The methodology may be presented with impressive technical language and detailed diagrams. To non-specialists, everything appears legitimate.

Yet sometimes the foundations are weaker than they first appear.

That is one reason the recent Great Pyramid retraction caught my attention.

The original paper, published in Remote Sensing in 2022, claimed to have identified previously unknown rooms, corridors and tunnels within the Pyramid of Khufu using synthetic aperture radar. After concerns were raised, the journal investigated and concluded that serious methodological and statistical flaws undermined the paper’s conclusions, leading to its retraction.

What strikes me is not that the paper was retracted. Retractions happen. The scholarly record is constantly corrected, refined and challenged.

What strikes me is how long the claims continued to circulate and how enthusiastically they were embraced outside the research community.

According to Retraction Watch, the researchers’ later claims were discussed on television programmes, podcasts and widely shared media reports. Meanwhile, experts in radar and archaeology were raising fundamental questions about whether the proposed methodology could work at all.

That gap between public enthusiasm and technical scrutiny is fascinating.

Frankly, it is also becoming increasingly common.

We live in an environment where a striking claim can circle the globe long before specialists have had an opportunity to pick it apart. By the time a methodological critique emerges, the narrative has often taken on a life of its own. The correction rarely receives the same attention as the original claim.

Publishers cannot control that.

What they can control is the quality of the scrutiny that takes place before and after publication.

One of the passages in the Retraction Watch article particularly caught my eye. The concerns that ultimately led to the retraction reportedly originated with a reader who questioned the methodology. The journal then investigated those concerns and reached its own conclusions.

That is a useful reminder that publication is not the finish line.

Authors sometimes see acceptance as the end of the process. Readers often assume that publication represents final validation. In reality, publication is simply the point at which a claim is exposed to wider examination. Good research survives that scrutiny. Weak research struggles.

From an editorial perspective, that process is one of the strengths of scholarly publishing rather than one of its weaknesses.

There is a growing tendency to treat retractions as evidence that the system has failed. Sometimes they are. But sometimes they demonstrate the opposite. Sometimes they show that criticism, challenge and correction are still functioning exactly as they should.

The alternative is far worse.

Imagine a publishing environment in which questionable claims could not be challenged after publication. Imagine journals refusing to revisit controversial findings in the face of new evidence. No serious researcher would want that.

This story also arrives at an interesting moment for those of us who spend time thinking about AI and research integrity.

Many current discussions focus on hallucinated references, fabricated citations and machine-generated text. Those concerns are legitimate. Yet the pyramid story points to something more fundamental. The underlying issue is not artificial intelligence. The underlying issue is critical evaluation.

Whether a claim has been written entirely by a human, edited by an AI tool or generated with substantial machine assistance, the same questions still apply.

Does the evidence support the conclusion?

Does the methodology withstand expert scrutiny?

Can the findings be replicated, challenged and defended?

Those questions have sat at the heart of scholarly communication for generations. They remain there today.

The technology changes. The principles do not.

In the end, I suspect the Giza story will be remembered less for what it claimed to discover and more for what it revealed about contemporary research communication. A compelling narrative, backed by technical language and amplified by media attention, can travel a very long way.

That is precisely why publishing still needs sceptics.

Not cynics. Not gatekeepers defending orthodoxy. Sceptics.

People willing to ask awkward questions, test assumptions and challenge conclusions before they become accepted wisdom.

The hidden chambers beneath the Great Pyramid may or may not exist. I have no view on that.

What I do know is that scientific credibility is built through scrutiny, not attention. And in an age where attention is cheap, that distinction matters more than ever.
